Lying on the Han River in South Korea is the country’s capital megacity Seoul (서울특별시). With the larger metro area having a population of ~26 million people as of 2022, Seoul currently ranks as the third largest metropolis in the world.
The city – officially “Seoul Special City” with the larger metro area referred to as the “Seoul Capital Area” – has roots dating back to the year 19 BC and has served as a capital city of Korea several times since.
With much of it utterly destroyed during the Korean War, the phenomenal economic growth and success of the city since 1953 supports that of the country overall, truly resulting in the miracle on the Han River.
